Below is my basic project proposal and outline. My motivation for researching nutrition and food security with regards to HIV/AIDS stems from a personal experience in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa during the summer of 2008. While accompanying a home-based care worker on his rounds, I met a middle aged, male HIV/AIDS patient whose story had a tremendous impact on me. The patient had been diagnosed with AIDS, and had been on ARV therapy for six months. He was also unemployed, and during his time on therapy had initially been receiving food aid parcels from the government, although they were often late or missing from week to week. However, once the patient's CD4 count rose back above a certain level (I believe it was 200), he was told that he no longer qualified for food aid. Thus he continued taking his ARV's while his nutritional status plummeted. His condition quickly deteriorated, and when I met him he was extremely malnourished and very weak, despite the fact that he had initially responded very well to antiretroviral treatment. I was struck by the fact that his treatment seemed to have been severely compromised by his lack of access to proper nutrition. Thus I have chosen to explore the issue of HIV/AIDS treatment in the context of nutrition and food security, as these are pressing public health concerns that are very closely linked.
Research Proposal: Malnutrition, Food Aid, and HIV/AIDS Treatment in sub-Saharan Africa
Purpose of project:
Malnutrition is a critical issue affecting treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS worldwide, particularly in developing countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this project would be to develop a basic understanding of the biological links between nutrition and HIV/AIDS, and use that knowledge to analyze and compare current nutrition and food aid programs in sub-Saharan African countries most affected by HIV/AIDS. Ultimately, this research project would assess the urgent need for further integration of nutrition programs into HIV/AIDS treatment. This need is based on the premise that successful treatment of HIV/AIDS in developing countries remains impossible unless basic nutrition needs can be met first.
Components of project:
Biology
- Research and understand the general biological connections between nutrition and HIV/AIDS, use information as background knowledge for understanding how to combat malnutrition and HIV/AIDS together
o Effect of the disease on energy metabolism
o Effect of malnutrition on CD4 count and disease progression
o Correlations between nutrition and success of ARV treatment
Policies/Programs
- Compile an overview of current nutrition policies and programs in sub-Saharan African countries with highest HIV/AIDS prevalence and incidence rates
Analysis
- Analyze the success of current programs
- Assess further need for food aid as a component of HIV/AIDS treatment
Present project as research paper and power point presentation with three components, with an emphasis on current policies and programs and future needs. Use biological basis simply as background information
- Possibly design and incorporate a food aid package/nutrition pamphlet for HIV/AIDS treatment programs that is realistic and economical enough to be applied in resource-poor settings
This is a good start. Your next step should be to select sources/references.
